Peter Nicol and Lee Beachill of England salute the crowd.
Squash duo Peter Nicol and Lee Beachill of England have won gold in a fiery Men's Doubles Final against Australia’s Stewart Boswell and Anthony Ricketts.
The first game set the scene for the match with both teams engaging in long rallies and taking few risks. The Australians edged ahead and took the game, 9-7, to establish an early psychological advantage.
The second game started in the same fashion with both teams playing a combination of hard and fast rallies with some deft touch, but it was the English team who edged ahead and took the second game, 9-7.
Beachill and Nicol established a strong lead quickly at the start of the third game and the Australians rarely looked like taking control of the play.
Ricketts and Boswell were becoming increasingly frustrated at some of the decisions and on a number of occasions left the court to remonstrate with the referee. This seemed to inspire the English pair and they finished off the third game 9-1.
In between the third and fourth games Ricketts approached the referee to again explain his displeasure at previous decisions, and the referee awarded a conduct warning against Ricketts for facing off with him.
Once the fourth game commenced, the squash was again tight and consistent.
The English pair held a slight edge for most of the game establishing an 8-5 lead. The Australians fought bravely and saved three match points, levelling the match at 8-8, and forcing a tie breaker which the English eventually took 10-8.
The English team embraced at the conclusion of the match. It was a triumphant tournament for Nichol who finishes the Games with two gold medals.
