The most successful
English medallist in
Commonwealth Games
history, Mick Gault.
Mick Gault of England has won the Men’s 25m Standard Pistol event gold medal from Pakistan’s Irshad Ali and Australia’s Bruce Quick.
It was clear that it was a hard fought victory for Gault with the gold medal being decided in a shoot-off where Gault won by 44 shots to 41.
The 51-year-old Gault has won more Commonwealth Games medals than any other English athlete in history and this was his first gold at the Melbourne Games.
"Leading up to the Games the pressure was fantastic, and also at the start of the Games, and my coach was aware that my head nearly exploded," said Gault.
Already a winner of three medals in competition at the Games in Melbourne: silver medallist Men's 10m Air Pistol Pairs, silver medallist Men's 50m Pistol and bronze medallist Men's 50m Pistol Pairs, Gault, a public servant in his other life felt no pressure going into today’s event.
Australian Bruce Quick picked up the bronze with 562 points, six points outside of Gault and Ali who shot off for gold.
The 11-time medallist at Commonwealth Games, which includes one gold at Auckland in 1990 in the Centre Fire Pistol pairs, could be happier with his double medal performance at the Melbourne Games.
"Two appearances, two medals, I couldn't be happier," said Quick.
"The scores are a little lower than I expected. It was very tight towards the end."
Samaresh Jung the champion Indian shooter missed out on the Commonwealth Games record for the most number of medals in a single Games.
“I didn’t know about the record before I left home, so it won’t be a disappointment. It is more important that my family is happy,” said Jung
