Shooting events combine skill, accuracy, concentration and speed, and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Shooting program will be conducted according to the rules of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Shooting program includes the following disciplines:
Clay Target
Twelve gold medals are on offer in the eight days of competition the Clay Target competition at the Melbourne Gun Club in Lilydale.
The competition consists of a qualification and a final round, with the score in the final round added to the competitor's score in the qualification rounds to determine the winner.

Pistol
A total of 14 gold medals will be presented across nine days of Pistol events at the Melbourne International Shooting Club.

Small Bore and Air Rifle
Twelve gold medals will be awarded to shooters in the Small Bore and Air Rifle competition over the eight days of competition at the Melbourne International Shooting Club.
The competition will be run in the same format as the Clay Target and Pistol events.

Full Bore Rifle
Two gold medals will be offered in three days of competition at the Wellsford Rifle Range in Bendigo.
The Full Bore Rifle competition does not include any qualifying rounds. The firing distances for this event are between 300 and 1,000 yards and competitors will shoot once per stage.
