Rules
Mountain Bike Cycling is very different from Track Cycling. The bikes are built for heavy duty usage. The terrain is fairly rough, containing small hills and many obstacles such as rocks, holes and tree branches.
All cyclists start at the same time and must follow the designated circuit allowing faster cyclists to pass. Cyclists are permitted to stop to make repairs to their bike themselves so they must ensure they carry all the necessary spare parts and tools.
The circuit is between 6km and 8km long.
Cyclists can be penalised for unsportsmanlike behaviour such as pushing competitors, grabbing at opponents clothing or deliberately blocking other cyclists.
The first to complete the required number of laps around the circuit is the winner.
Equipment
Tool repair kit
Tool repair kits - containing a spare tyre tube, tyre lever, inflation canister and hand-held tool - are required to fix punctured tyres or other sustained damages.
Helmet
Helmets are required for all Cycling events. They have vents to allow air flow around the scull, keeping the cyclists head cooler.
Mountain Bike
A Mountain bike is a heavy-duty bike with thick tyres and large grooves to help with traction. Depending on the weather, cyclists may choose to select a type of tyre appropriate for wet or dry conditions. Unlike the Track cycling bike, mountain bikes have hydraulic disc brakes.
Gloves
Gloves protect the cyclist’s hands from scratches when riding as well as aiding grip to the handle bars, particularly over bumpy terrain.
