With the support of a home crowd, 18-year-old medal prospect Leonardo Zappavigna defeated Gomotsang Gaasite of Botswana in an easy win in the Lightweight division.
Known as the ‘Jeff Fenech’ of modern day Australian boxing, Zappavigna will now face Tanzanian Karimu Nyamwela in the quarters.
Kaimu Nyanweda was matched against Herberto “Plinio” Mabombo of Mozambique in what started out to be a spirited contest, but turned into a contest dominated by Nyamwela who eventually won 42-24.
In the third bout of the evening, Rasheed Lawal of Nigeria faced Canadian Ibrahim Kamal. In what was the tightest encounter of the division for the evening, Lawal scraped through with a 15-14 win.
Indian Jai Bhagwan posed no real threat to the more impressive Frankie Gavin of England. Gavins’ dominating 20-8 win sets up a Quarter Final encounter with Canadian Lawal.
