Scots survive Basketball clash

19 Mar 06 03:46
A tenacious Scotland overcame a slow start to defeat India, 67-57, in their Group A match at the Geelong Arena.

Traralgon-born Dan Wardrope top scored with 21 points for Scotland, receiving support from Tom Pearson with a handy 15 points and 14 rebounds.

India lost its focus early in the second quarter when Robinson Sozhasingharayer was forced to sit out with foul trouble. At half time Scotland led 36-23. The Scots gained momentum as the game progressed and attacked the ring relentlessly.

India refused to give up and their bench players kept them in the contest. Riyaz Uddin again led the way with 20 points and was clearly their best player. However it was their 33 fouls that ultimately cost India the match.

Australia will be competing with Nigeria in the Men’s Preliminary tonight. Australia defeated Scotland 129-52 in the first match and is looking confident of another win and progression to the Semi Finals.

In Pool B, New Zealand will play Barbados, who lost their first match to England but toppled South Africa, 88-72, in the second match.

A win for New Zealand
will move them into the Semi Finals.
