Canadian diving legend Alexandre Despatie claims his fifth Games medal.

Canadian diver Alexandre Despatie came to Melbourne already a legend and favourite to win his events. He has started his Games campaign with a score of 853.50 and gold in the Men’s 1m Springboard.

Malaysia’s Ken Nee Yeoh dived for the silver medal, scoring 844.95, while Australia’s Steven Barnett captured bronze in front of a home crowd, with 777.85 points.

At just 20 years of age, Despatie is at the pinnacle of the Diving world and is competing in his third Commonwealth Games - he began competing when he was just five years old.

"It's not about the scores. Of course I would have liked the scores to be a little higher, but I think it was an exciting contest for everyone," he said.

"The important thing was to dive good. It was very consistent today."

Despatie's other events in Melbourne include the Men's 3m Springboard, Men's 10m Platform and Men's Synchronised 3m Springboard.
