Other In 2004, Rick scratched himself from the 400m Freestyle event during the Olympic Trials to focus on the 200m. The move paid off - Rick finished first in the 200m with a time of 1:47.16, which was the fifth fastest time in the world and a new Canadian record mark.

Rick is a naturally-gifted athlete. He only began swimming seriously at age 18 at the University of Victoria but by the next season he was headed to the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

An established star on the national scene, Rick appears on the cusp of international stardom. He was a finalist at the 2000 Olympics, competed at the 2001 World and earned a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He holds the Canadian record in the 200m Freestyle.

In 2000 he broke one of Canada's most historical national records at the Olympic Trials - he clocked 3:49.99 to eclipse the mark set by Peter Szmidt of Pointe-Claire in 1980, which at the time was a world record that stood for 18 months.
