| Other || Amaechi was born in Boston, raised in Manchester, England and went to high school in Toledo, Ohio. He was recruited and played NBA basketball for eight seasons. In the meantime, John earned a degree in psychology from Penn State and is currently in a doctorate program focusing on child clinical psychology.|

Amaechi realised a dream of his on 14-Aug-2005, when he opened the Amaechi Basketball Centre on the site of Whalley Range High School in Manchester, England. The $4 million facility was conceived and financed entirely by Amaechi and will be under the direction of The Greater Manchester Community Basketball and Sports Association. The centre includes three International-sized basketball courts, an aerobics studio, fitness suite and physiotherapy services and will provide both mentoring resources and athletic programs specifically geared towards adolescents.
He is captain of the English team and has come out of retirement to play at these Commonwealth Games.
Since 1993 he has been the ambassador for Big Brothers/Big Sisters UK and has mentored over 30 children. He is also involved with the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) campaign of the UK National Literacy Trust.
