Other Darian was only a few months old when his mother Rita, a swimming teacher, began teaching him. His father Ted recalls that Darian could swim before he could walk.

He says his favourite Olympic moment was when Peter van den Hoogenband beat Ian Thorpe in the 200m Freestyle at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Excelling also out of the water, Darian was the 2002 Maritzburg College matriculant who took up watersport in high school. His friends describe him as quiet but confident.

He started swimming competitively at the age of eight.

When he qualified for the Olympics in 2004, he was the youngest member of the South African swim team.
