Melbourne, Victoria and Australia
From the first day of competition to the last, the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will draw fans from all over the globe. To ensure the event runs smoothly for spectators, a ticketing strategy has been devised to ensure tickets are distributed fairly, guaranteeing one thing – when the Games begin, the stands will be filled with fans eager to add their voice to the action.
When the Commonwealth Games come to Melbourne in March 2006, tickets to watch the action will be in high demand. With up to 1 million tickets available to the general public, covering all 16 sports, the stands will be brimming with eager fans, families and sports lovers keen to add their voice to the live action.
To ensure the distribution of tickets is fair, the Commonwealth Games Ticketing Strategy has been devised with a few key aims in mind. First and foremost, tickets to be part of the live action will be affordable and accessible, offering maximum opportunity for spectators to attend all venues and across every session.
More than 55 per cent of the available seating at each venue will be preserved for the Australian Ballot, with no other group able to access these tickets. And that’s just for starters.
How much will tickets cost?
Ticket prices start at just $15. Additionally, a family of four can be part of the live action for as little as $44.
Tickets have been priced to make the Games action available to as many as possible. Over 50 per cent of tickets to the Games are priced below $60, and all ticket prices quoted include all fees, GST and free travel on metropolitan Melbourne’s trams, trains and buses on the day of the event.
Also, families have been specially catered for with a Family Package. Designed to assist young families in attending the Games, Melbourne 2006 has developed a range of Family Package options.
Family Packages must include a minimum of four people, at least two of which are children aged 2 – 12 years:
F4 – 2 adults and 2 children
F5 – an F4 package plus 1 additional ticket
F6 – an F4 package plus 2 additional tickets
F7 – an F4 package plus 3 additional tickets
Family Package options are not available to session with a four-ticket maximum when only a standard Family Package is available.
For families of eight or more, additional standard Family Packages up to the ticket limit available for that session may be requested.
Family Packages and Family Package options are only available to that session and are subject to availability.
What do the price categories mean?
Tickets are divided intro categories which are Level A, Level B, Level C, Level D and Family Packages.
Levels A, B, C and D refer to the specific location of a seat within the venue.
What about tickets for the companions of disabled people?
To ensure people of all ages, cultures and abilities feel welcome and enjoy the Games, the Victorian Government’s Companion Card Scheme makes it possible for cardholders to bring a companion, free of charge, to any event they wish to see. People with disabilities will be able to book wheelchair, companion and easy-access seats. Companion Card is a Victorian-only initiative. Interstate visitors must have a letter from their doctor verifying their needs for a carer. For further information see the website details below.

Are There Any Free Events?
Yes, there are 11 free events. Events like the Road Cycling, Walking, Triathlon and Marathon can be enjoyed at no charge. These events will play themselves out on Melbourne’s picturesque streets, along its palm-fringed beaches and through its inner-city parklands.
The St Kilda beachfront will host both the Men’s and Women’s Triathlons, while the Marathon will follow. The Road Cycling will take place around the Royal Botanic Gardens, a short walk from the CBD, and the Walking will showcase Melbourne’s Parklands. So pack a picnic or plan your day around catching the free events while the Games are on.
Many of the events in the Cultural Festival will also be free.
