In collaboration with Victorian College of the Arts.
Festival Melbourne2006 is proud to host one of the most significant music education symposiums in Australia. The International Youth Masterclass in Percussion, for registered participants only, will provide a lasting legacy for 90 tertiary percussion students from major music institutions round Australia. It’s part of the Festival’s aim to provide such opportunities for local artists, students and communities to benefit from the convergence in Melbourne of world-class artists from all parts of Australia and the Commonwealth for the Commonwealth Games.
Based on the campus of the Victorian College of the Arts, these students will work intensively over two weeks with top percussionists from around the Commonwealth including Scotland’s Evelyn Glennie, Liam Teague from Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana’s Nii Tettey Tetteh, and England’s Talvin Singh and Johnny Kalsi, alongside ensembles Nexus (Canada), the Dhol Foundation (England/India), Scrap Arts Music (Canada), Kusun Ensemble (Ghana), The Renegades Steel Orchestra (Trinidad and Tobago) and Australia’s own Synergy. Over these two weeks, each solo artist or ensemble will give a lecture demonstration. A series of interactive sessions will allow the students to learn different rhythms and traditional drumming techniques from all over the world.
This intensive workshop will culminate in a major free concert, World Percussion Spectacular, at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl at 7.30pm on March 19.
We invite you to come along and see the future stars of Australian percussion performing alongside some of the most renowned percussionists in the world.
