CARVE

CARVE brings together artists from the Commonwealth nations of Canada, New Zealand and Australia, to examine contemporary practices of traditional indigenous carving. Throughout the period of the Games, each artist will participate in workshops open to the public, making new work and demonstrating the role of traditional technique, motif and custom in their practice. Canadian First Nations master carver Wayne Alfred will use a combination of traditional and modern tools to create a 10ft interior totem pole; Maori carver Aaron Kereopa will carve images concerned with issues such as ancestral navigation, tribal legend and mythology on recycled surfboards; Tiwi carver Patrick "Freddy" Puruntatameri will carve the pukumani poles used in burial ceremonies; and Bangerang elder Sandy Atkinson and fellow artists Kelvin Atkinson (Bangerang) and Neville Atkinson (Bangerang) will demonstrate the making of a traditional dugout canoe and also describe the process of bark canoe-making.
